One of the mysteries of gas hydrate deposits offshore Joetsu in the Sea of Japan is why red snow crabs frequently congregate around them. Low temperatures (0.2 degC) at the seafloor at a water depth of 902 m immediately convert methane into icy-looking gas hydrate. Here we see crabs digging around the seeps. Although it looks as if they are eating the gas hydrate, it is actually sticking to their shells. it is unclear whether they are attracted to it in some way or merely find it a hindrance in their foraging for food.
日本海上越沖のガスハイドレート集積エリアにおいて、湧出するメタンの周りにベニズワイガニが集まっているが、その理由はわからない。海底（水深902 m）の水温は低く（0.2℃)、湧出ガスはすぐに氷のようなガスハイドレートに変わってしまう。ガス湧水の周りでベニズワイガニが掘る姿が観察され、それはハイドレートを食べているようにもみえるが、ハイドレートは殻にくっついている。ベニズワイガニがガス自体に惹かれて集まっているのか、あるいは何かを食べるときに単にハイドレートが邪魔しているだけなのか、まだわからない。
