Institute of Law and Social Sciences was founded to plan, design and conduct empirical
social-scientific research on legal institutions in April 2005. In Japan a
series of judicial reform has been planned and implemented since 2000.
Efforts for judicial reform will be continuously made to respond to
future social changes. In this context, it is particularly important in
planning a policy for institutional reform to have empirical data on how
an institution works in what social conditions. The purpose of ILSS is to
plan and conduct empirical research which is necessary for formulating
reform policies, and to promote the training of future social scientists
who will conduct a wide range of policy studies. At present, ILSS manages
two research projects:
(1) Dispute Resolution and Civil Justice in the Legalizing Society (Civil
Justice Research Project)
(2) Disputant’s Needs and Out-of-Court Dispute
Resolution ? Analyses on Empirical Data
